Release 0.2.1 - Customisation + Widgets
Date Posted: 31/08/2009 20:48 by Peter Grace
The latest updates are now live for you to see and try out, all building on the functionality introduced in the 0.2 release just over a week ago. There are four new features added in all, plus a new field you can use when logging bike rides, and a couple of bug fixes. I’ll give you a quick overview in the rest of this article.
The most significant area of enhancement is to the dashboard which you will probably have noticed straight away if you’re logged in. I’m going for a ‘widget’-based approach which in time will give you the opportunity to customise the layout and what information you want to see, so to start off we’ve got the Activity Summary and a graph for Monthly Distance. The former is a feature that’s already available on the existing website and is a useful reference to see how you’re doing. The latter is the sort of thing I want to introduce a lot more of and again allow you to customise. Hopefully you’ll all be motivated to get your graphs going in an upward direction!
The next feature I’ve added is the ability to choose the fields that get shown in the table for Bike Rides. To be honest this should have been in the release last week as without it the tables would really have only been properly functional for those of you who’ve specified your Favourite Fields.
When you choose the columns that you want displayed, you have the option to update your Favourite Fields based on this, so whatever fields you set here will be reflected when you next go to add a Bike Ride, and vice versa. I can’t decide if that’s the right way to go, or whether there should be two separate sets of preferences – one for the form and another for the tables. On the one hand it enhances usability by keeping things simple, but possibly at the expense of a little flexibility. So if you would prefer them to be kept separate let me know and I’ll re-evaluate the approach.
The final area of change to the dashboard is the addition of a small information banner at the top that will appear the first time you log in after improvements have been made to the site. It’s just to grab your attention and direct you to the blog if you’re interested in finding out more and participating with your feedback.
To round up the changes, there is now a drop-down field in which you can specify weather conditions for your bike ride. And there are two bugs that I’ve fixed – one of which was causing the rendering of the tables to get messed up in Firefox. The other one didn’t have any obvious impact in the front-end but was causing my error logs to fill up rather rapidly and make it difficult to spot any real errors.
As ever, any feedback is very welcome, you can leave it here or send it to mail@mycycling.co.uk.

I think it's time to include 2010 in your calendar. I can get round it by changing view, but it's not intuitive.
Thanks CP

Thanks for a great site. I use it all the time to keep track of my yearly mileages. The dates on the bottom of the graph are crowded and they overlap each other, making them difficult to read. Can you re-format them or is it to do with my screen res?

How about adding the day and time of day the ride started as this may influence the ride characteristics especially traffic conditions
